Just for a second, let's be practical here. And before you read on - realize I'm not bashing Ann here, ok?

Let's assume that the ratings drop has absolutely nothing to do with Ann at all.
If by some miracle NBC does an about face and gives her another chance, doesn't that just strap her onto a ship
that's already sinking? And for her own sake, how will that do her career any good?
I can't imagine even her biggest fans would want that.

On the other hand, what do you do about the skills she's lacking in? Just hope that it clears up like a case of acne?
Chances are it won't, and in that case, how long would she stand up to the constant criticism without just leaving on her own?

Problem with this is, Today has multiple issues right now. Ann is by far not the only one, but think of it this way:
Only getting rid of Ann (or anyone else) will not solve anything if they keep doing more of the ridiculous fluff.
Likewise, only changing the show's format will do nothing to make her a better broadcaster.
(And I mean in that setting -- she's much better in other elements)

Seems as if they're going to need to makeover the show in more ways than one.

I don't think it's so much about saving Ann as it is about making a statement. The inmates have been running the asylum for far too long.

Duly noted. It's not her gig. If it had been she would have gotten it before Meredith. So, yeah, "much better in other elements" is right. Although she'll eventually end up in pasture over at CNN. So it goes.

Ann is just the scapegoat here. All those morning shows are exactly the same, the only difference being the talking heads who host them. So when ratings fall, they look for someone to blame - the most vulnerable of the on-air talent being the easiest target.

As others have stated here, getting rid of her will do no good at all unless they replace her with someone who, for some reason, draws a lot of viewers. The taste of the American TV viewing audience is so horrible right now, talent, creativity and originality work against you. Getting kicked off that show is almost like a compliment - you're not stupid enough to draw the viewers we want.

They'll probably replace her with Snooki or a Kardashian.

Anyone notice that ever since Ann has taken over the top spot she has dressed way more conservatively? She wears longer skirts and dresses and doesn't show as much leg as she used to. The ratings probably are slipping because of this and would definitely go up if she went back to the way she used to dress. Rumor has it that the execs want her out and want Hoda to take her spot and they are planning to once again pair up Regis with Kathie Lee in the fourth hour. I would love to see Regis and Kathie Lee together again but I don't know about seeing Hoda in Ann's spot I would rather see Savannah over her and actually Amy should have had that spot, that would have spiked up the ratings for sure. Too bad that Amy left but at least I can see her on GMA. :P

Multiple sources are starting to say that Savannah Guthrie looks like the lock as Ann's replacement.

Personally, I would vote NO WAY for Savannah Guthrie. She seems kind, skilled, and hard working. But a main stay in the big chair, NO.

Congrats to Savannah. I've always enjoyed watching her. I look forward to seeing, eh, more of her on the Today Show.

Even msnbc.com offered an interesting take on what could happen, even as the Australian born Guthrie contemplates on what will be next for her and where in the world Ann Curry will be traveling to next:

I agree, I like Savannah but as the top dog I just don't think so. I don't know if Hoda would be any better but putting her there and pairing up Regis back with Kathie Lee would definitely help the fourth hours ratings for sure.

Ann Curry steps down at Today show today. The Today show will never be the same. I will miss her hosed gems x1000. She wore the sheerest sexiest hose. I wish her the best in the future.

But first, this rather interesting commentary on her departure from Today after 15 years:

http://tv.msn.com/tv/article.aspx?news=739579&ocid=rr-tv-news

The part to focus on will be the quote concerning her replacement, Australian born and Arizona raised Savannah Guthrie:

"But is NBC absolutely sure that Savannah Guthrie is that person? I'm willing to bet that NBC has no idea whether Guthrie is the new It Host. Whoever made this decision probably got tired of having the bean counters in their office saying: "We're hemorrhaging money, and we think it's Curry. You've got to do something."

So that something is Guthrie. And godspeed to you, Savannah, but don't buy any new property just yet. And whatever you do, don't go rafting with NBC executives if the ratings continue to dive."

The article from Tim Goodman concluded by saying:

"...my advice to Guthrie is to check the overnight ratings every morning. And if they're down, smile as wide as you can, nod approvingly at everything Lauer says and keep your head on a swivel."

And expect a lot of globetrotting with Curry being NBC News' major National and International Correspondent.

Have fun capping Savannah! Should be very interesting.

IMHO, Today's ratings are suffering because they've been running features promoting shows on NBC/Universal's sister channels too much (particularly the trash from E! and Bravo). Honestly, the "Real Housewives", "Bethenny", the Kardashians etc.? Likewise, segments on such luminaries as Octomom. And c'mon, every time a silly video goes viral (most of which I suspect are staged), they fly the subject in for an interview. It's just become a tabloid trash show. Ann should be glad to escape while she still has a shred of journalistic integrity left.

After watching GMA the last couple of weeks, they're really no better. First 15 minutes is news then rest of the show is fluff. Lara Spencer gets a couple segments in the 2nd hour with celebrity news/gossip and a celebrity interview.

If you look at Today's since Jane Pauley, it's the female co-host that drives the show. Pauley, Couric, Vieirra succeeded. Norville and Curry failed. We'll see which group Guthrie joins.
