ESPN reporter Britt McHenry is facing backlash from a video just released
showing an argument between her and the employee of a towing service in the DC area:

The incident took place on April 6th.
McHenry is mostly heard in the clip, hurling insults at the employee about the woman's
education, weight, and teeth, plus threatening that her job with ESPN would help her in a potential lawsuit:
“I’m in the news, sweetheart, I will f*cking sue this place..."

McHenry has Tweeted an apology, but was still suspended by her network effective immediately.

See, this is one thing that I've never understood about being in the news media --
Britt's certainly not the only one to try throwing her weight around, but I've never gotten why
so many in the business have that chip on their shoulder -- so you're on TV...you still
get colds, you still use the toilet, you still age --you're not superhuman. What is it about
some of these people that almost requires them to have almost a comically huge ego?
(And in her case -- why should she? She's hardly been around long enough yet!)

Why can't you just have your job on the air, but also not be a (fill in your favorite male or female slang term here)
about it when you're off air?

She was even made aware of the presence of the camera above her, and still rolled on with the rant...
remarkably stupid.
Sorry, Britt -- I really don't know you all that well to begin with, and kinda glad I don't now...
Ugliness like that, even when it's not visible on the outside, is a total turnoff for me. :?

My thoughts: we are addicted to media (I freely admit this about myself); the non-stop media has made celebrities out of people with average or below average intelligence but with above average appearances; it is possible that many people in the news media have an inflated sense of their own "importance" and also a sense of entitlement; because of this inflated sense of entitlement and importance, I can imagine that many NEWS READERS (that is, after all, what they are) see themselves as better than the "little people" who work hard, do their jobs, but have not achieved any level of fame.

This is yet another example of how we are under constant audio and video surveillance by the government and/or private citizens with their cell phones. The lesson is this: if you want to rant, blow off steam, etc. about anyone or anything, you would be smart to wait until you return to the privacy of your own home. If you do this in public, there is a really good chance you are being recorded.

Notwithstanding paragraph 2. above, I agree that TV news people should not be mean and insulting to "regular people." Her suspension by ESPN is damage control. Perhaps it will deter others from engaging in similar behavior in the future.

I watched the video. Stressful situation or not, to make continued attacks on someone like that....

Pretty terrible. I don't think a tweeted apology is going to do it.

She's pretty average looking. Forget her filtered and touched up photos. Watch her on TV. Regardless, bringing up the looks and education because your car got towed shows how big a brat she is.

I noticed she was a U.S. trending topic for a while; seems to be a broad consensus condemning her actions/words

Having dated 'someone in the news' I can attest that many female presenters have narcissistic personality disorders, are very arrogant, & also very insecure. I suspect the outburst was less of an attack on the employee, but more an outward venting of her own self-loathing. Very highly-strung these women.

It's a towing company I'm sure non-media, "normal" people yell at them everyday. She's still nasty but it doesn't say anything about everyone in media. We're only hearing about it because she's slightly famous.

The thing that gets me is she knew the camera was on her but went on her way trashing the lady
To be fair, I'm sure I wouldn't be happy if my car got towed, but you can be upset wothout getting personal
The week suspension sounds fair but the problem is she is a recent hire and not a big name
Every time you see her from now on, you'll think about the incident
Don't think she'll be long for the World Wide Leader

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think Martha got punished for that. I think Britt's suspension should have been longer (two weeks) but I think she'll recover like Kelly Thighman especially after she made comments about Tiger Woods was one of two reporters to interview Tiger after his couldn't keep it in the pants scandal happened. Also to some extent Alycia Lane though after the LA station that hired her after her Philly scandal left her go in fall of 2013 and hasn't been on TV since.

the resolution will be determined by 2 things:

- potential morals/ethics clauses in her contract

- ESPNs perception of the national outcry

This story has been picked up by most major AND minor news outlets. Everyone wants to talk about it...

A good point that many analysts make is that McHenry has not yet offered a deep apology to the individual she berated.

here the main issue with this mess. if this was done like 20 to 25 years ago we would not seen this video also would not went this all over internet. also fact we live in world if your not PC any more you get you get this. karma will come by and say high. so if do something to naughty and nasty you have pay price for it.

They should also know that there is another "HOTTIE" right in line behind them ready to take their place by looking good and can read a teleprompter and ask a question that a producer tells them to ask..
