On Thursday afternoon, the news came throughout social media that ABC13's lead anchor Mark Spain had passed away from pancreatic cancer, which he was only diagnosed with three weeks ago. Mark had been diagnosed with stage four of the disease, and he had been at Lynchburg General Hospital undergoing treatment. On Tuesday, everyone across the area wore purple showing solidarity toward Mark's fight. News organizations, former colleagues, and fans across the area showed their support. But sadly, with Thursday's five o'clock newscast, the news came that Mark had passed. Lead anchors Noreen Turyn, Danner Evans, and Meteorologist George Flickinger choked back tears as they remembered Mark. This was followed by a montage of pictures of everyone who had worn purple in Mark's honor. A very brief taped newscast followed with morning anchor Pattie Martin and Danner. This was repeated several times throughout the news broadcast schedule, and they told viewers that several newscasts to follow would not be shown in favor of national or syndicated programming. The eleven o'clock newscast was not shown and replaced by The National Desk. I'm sure that today's Good Morning Virginia will not be shown as well.
