It appears the recorder turns them into vob files I guess? I can't use CyberLink or Roxio to translate trhem....
What does anyone else use out there?

Set top DVD recorders all record in .VOB which is a type of mpeg-2. There's a list of software resources listed as a sticky on this forum that should help. I would recommend Virtual Dub Mod or MediaCoder. Just configure your codec settings for video and audio. Don't forget audio compression! Uncompressed audio will result in huge files which defeats the purpose of compressing. If you don't know about codec settings Google search the codec you want to use for your AVI, and there should be plenty of info out there. You could post codec questions here too.
