I made a few decent UHF antennas based on the design on this website
http://uhfhdtvantenna.blogspot.com/ , minus the foil reflector. I'm close enough to the only VHF station in town so a separate antenna for that was not needed. That design is highly directional, especially with distant stations. Using splitters, I was able to link two of them together, pointed at two cities (one about 50 miles away) and got great reception (had to put them on the second floor to get all channels). Use the matching transformer (as in the pics) to transition to coax cable to limit signal loss.
