I was wondering if the PS3 might be doable. It is less money and doesn't overheat. |

Hold on a second. Are you asking if you can capture (I assume TV given the subject matter on this site) with a PS3 or PS4? Or are you asking what capture device would be good for recording media/gameplay on the PS3/PS4?  Well, if it's the former, I'm not aware that that is even possible. |

I have a PS3 with "play tv" add on, it is possible to capture, and you can then transfer the footage from the HDD, was looking up ps4, might be harder since it doesn't let you play files from USB's/External HDD's, hopefully they will fix the issue in a update. |

You can buy a device called an EDID spoofer. They run $70 on the chea end. I bought after I got set up and the EDID handshake programmed so the target will retain HDCP connection capability, for the PC-side of things. |

That's interesting. Wasn't aware that you could do that with a PS3. I haven't been keeping up with PlayStations since my last one was the PS2.  I usually try to help with capture devices here, but this one is beyond me. Sorry I can't help. |

I guess sometimes the display needs to be cycled on or off for the handshake to take place but as long as the go between recording it is doing its job all is well. |
