For those of you who live in New Jersey, Verizon has been and will continue to wire various neighborhoods with Fiber Optic wire. Their goal and gamble is to wire the entire state. What does this mean to the NJ residents and hopefully others in Verizon's territory....
FAST and consistent internet speed! Cable is a restricted pipe for data transfer. The more people on cable the slower the data transfer. With Fiber Optic wire straight to the house, one can achieve fast data transfer rates no matter how many people are using the system.
NJ legislature has granted Verizon to offer cable TV over these wires to compete with cable companies. I am sure these rates will be very competitive for the himeowners.
I signed up for a 15Mps DL/5Mps UL rates for $45/month. Tests show that I actually have 20Mps and 4Mps. I am not going to quibble over a slower UL rate since I download WAY more than I upload. However, I have learned a couple of things now that I have this faster speed....
1. DL speed is dependent upon how fast the server speed is. For example: Downloading from Ultrashare is still the same rate before and after ISP change but others like Rapidshare and Scambia have been quicker (600kbs and 1.3Mbs respectively).
2. You need a HUGE HD and fast processor to handle all of the downloads that can happen at once!
NO IT IS NOT ALL PORN! Get your mind out of the gutter! 
3. If you have DirecTV and have seen the commercials for Direcway satelite internet, DON'T GET IT! The satelite is WAAAAAAY oversold and the equipment is very expensive. It would work if you are in a very rural area with no cable access.
