Post subject:  Making screen caps from a dvd

I'm kind of new to trying to get screen caps of a dvd I'm watching. Not being a "tech" guy, I thought if i just hit "print screen" and save the image to a bitmap, it would be ok. So i did just that with the movie "V for Vendetta" since Natalie Portman looked hot in the movie. I thought I would share some caps with everyone, and had about 18 or so. When i closed out the movie which I was watching in Windows media player, all my images were blank. I guess that's not the way to go about doing this. Any advice? Anything out there I can download?

Just for FYI- Nat Po was wearing this pink schoolgirl outfit in one scene with pigtails and lemme just say "hot!". She had a good upskirt in that outfit. Plus, the movie was surprisingly good. I didn't know much about it before watching it, but really digged the movie.

Does this have a cap feature in the software?

It's built in the player
just pause the video and go to file on the player and choose save image

Ah ok. I went through some of the programs on the computer and had a "Imtoo dvd ripper". I think he used to burn dvds with it, but don't know if that does capping. (I bought this computer from a friend, and he had alot of programs I've never used)

YOU are the man! :bow
I downloaded that and it worked great! I made a couple caps from a vid i downloaded from here, and they turned out perfect. Tomorrow I will get to work on the Natalie Portman caps I wanted to post!

Hmm.. I use MPC all the time, but I didn't know it could handle DVDs -- all that encryption and such. I'll need to check that... [but at the least i can add to the throng that for "ordinary video files" [mpgs, avis, etc] capping/watching/whatever is a snap]

If Nero came with you DVD player, then you can make caps with that as well. That is what I do. :Thumb

PowerDVD also has a feature that lets you make caps while watching a dvd.

If you are having trouble catching the exact frame you want you can rip the dvd onto your harddrive and then load the video into virtualdub (be sure you have the version that can handle MPEG2) then you can go frame by frame to get the one you are looking for.
It is also a handy way of making a small vid of a scene from a dvd.

I use VirtualDub-MPEG2 load the vob in find the frames you want then use control+1 then paste into a photo program, I use paint shop pro for my photo program. I use MpegVideoWizard to make my vid's from the vob files.

You could use Dscaler and just open up the file and play it in Dscaler and then hit "L" to make a cap.

Is that "Cyberlink Power Dvd"? I see that in the list of programs, but never used it.
I took JStaino's advice and downloaded the older Media Player CLassic and made some decent caps from a dvd. I'm posting them tonight. Don't look bad, although i have to get the hang of using that program.

Oh what the heck. I'll weigh in.

I use Zoom Player: the key is Alt-F. I like Zoom player because I can move forward and back frame by frame until I find the best one with the least distortion.

I have used VirtualDub, but don't like the two step process (copy here, paste there).

I don't know about all of them, but for most of them, you can download them but they're not free... [I suspect you really meant to ask about the latter part, and not the former...:)]. MPC is for-sure free, and Nero and PowerDVD are both for-sure *not* free. I'm not exactly sure about the others mentioned, but GIYF.

Well, free is always good, but most of the time doesn't really come with instructions or tech support. I didn't know if any of this stuff was bought in a store, where i could ask questions.

I use Nero, but you also need software to convert files to jpeg. With PowerDVD you can make caps in jpeg format. I chose Nero since it came with a bunch of other video software in the bundle.
