I never had a problem playing any files until recently making the switch from Windows 2000 to XP on my second PC. I thought VLC was supposed to be able to handle anything? Maybe I need DivX(?) but I see that the Vanessa Minnillo clip is a regular video file, so I am wondering what the problem is. I used to be able to play DivX clips with no problem before... never downloaded the codec (and have always had my players set to no automatic codec downloads). Is there simply a DivX codec (as to not have to download yet another player)? I have never downloaded anything DivX related as many years ago people would always complain of spyware... but I'm assuming that is no longer the case. However, that still does not quite explain the second clip not playing.

Any step in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The BPM clip is a Divx file which requires the Divx player (which is free). The second file was choppy with WMP 9.0 but played fine with Divx. :Thumb

Do you have MP classic for xp?
It plays dvd,divx,qt,rm,avi,mpeg,wmv
It's the only player you need for most of the clips
And the rest should play with vlc

Thanks for the quick replies. Rocky, I'll give the DivX player a try. I just really dislike adding another player (along with the three above, I also have Real & QuickTime Alternative installed).

And jstanio, yes, I do have MP Classic for XP... it plays DivX files on my other PC (running 2000), but does not under XP unfortunately. It was the only extra player I needed... until now. I download a lot of clips that just won't play on any of the three.

Hopefully I'll get this sorted out in order to enjoy all of the great clips going up.

I have a link to the beta. Not quite sure if it's still available though.

I don't quite know why MP Classic doesn't play Divx clips under XP... but it's a pain. Maybe I'll remove and see if there's an updated version. If that fails... looks as though another player will be added to my growing collection.

Some of this clips are just too good to pass up.

For MP Classsic to play divx i think you need to get the divx player because it comes with codecs that mp classic needs to play divx

Tried DivX Player... uninstalled it. It is way too bloated for me. But more importantly, the video files that I played were choppy and slow - and I have a fast processor with plenty of RAM (plenty of video RAM as well).

I cannot quite figure out why Media Player Classic played every single file imaginable (DivX included) under 2000, but I can't get any one player (or three actually) to do that under this PC running XP.

I have always been able to figure out a solution to my PC problems... but this is ridiculous.

Ah ok.
I just downloaded Media Player Classic this past week and it works great for me. I'm running XP on my computer.

I run windows XP Proferssional on my laptop and work laptop and Windows Media Classic works just fine. Make sure you go in and get all thew software updates for it. That should solve the problem. Anytime I get a file I can not play I go in and get the updated patches (softare updates) for it and it work perfectly. In fact I get updates for automaticlly through windows XP Pro settings at least once a month.

Hope you get it to work

Windows Media Player 11 seems to be ok.

Or you may want to look around at this site. You should find something here to help you out:

How would I go about getting the updates? I cannot seem to find where the option might be available under WMP Classic.

You said you updgraded to XP so why don't you try uninstalling one of the players then reinstalling it.

Do it with a player you don't use much as a test.
