Post subject:  Internet Explorer 7 problems

Howdy, i just want to see if anyone else is having issues with IE7. I don't use it much, as I've switched to Firefox. But problem is that some links automatically open up in IE. Whenever i open IE, now it always opens up an extra window which is blank, and ever since downloading IE7, clicking on any desktop item takes a while to open. IE7 seems to have taken some of the features from FireFox like tabbed browsing, but still sucks I think. Anyone else having problems with it?

Just started using IE7 myself recently but havent had that problem. I think its related to the "feeds". Delete any that may be shown and additional content wont be displayed. :?

Honestly, I hate it. I've used Firefox for 4 years now and only use IE for sites that require flash and updates (I don't have flash installed on FF... slows pages down IMO). Beyond curiosity, I don't even know why I upgraded. It has even messed up Windows to the point where I have no choice but to do a reinstall.

Sorry that I can't help you. I did a quick search but found nothing. I know how annoying these flaws can be... so I'll see what I can dig up tonight.

People are using Internet Explorer 7 :o

Seriously, I only use FireFox 2.0 . I don't go to any websites that need IE so I have no reason to install IE 7.

If you get Vista, it is only going to support IE 7.0. :?

That sounds like the Windows problems that I'm having. When i click on anything on the desktop, it takes a good 10 seconds or more before anything happens. I really don't want to use IE but the problem is that my remote work email doesn't work right with Firefox. It's set up for IE and I have to check that alot.
I've never uninstalled and reinstalled Windows. Will that erase everything that's on the desktop and all files/folders on the computer? I'm only a couple years removed from Webtv, so not really a "techie".

There's a firefox extension that allows you to view pages in an IE format on firefox browser. Try it out.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/

Once you install it all you have to do is left click on the the orange firefox icon in the bottom right hand corner to toggle between IE and firefox.

I use it because there are some websites I have to go to that don't function properly with firefox.

Yes it does. I do it every six months by simply backing up everything on disc and then doing a fresh install. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, but Windows gradually gains problems over time regardless of how often you defrag your drive. So when I begin to have too many freezes, etc., I reinstall.

I've just been putting it off until my new DVD burner arrives but I think I may do it over the weekend.

Internet Exlorer 7 does indeed suck a**. I had to delete it and go back to 6. 6 works fine and I also had firefox on this machine but I don't need it now because i'm back on IE6.

I formatted my computer and put up IE 6, a few days later I thought I would try the IE 7. Within 1 or 2 days it got on my nerves so much, I tried to restore my computer back to IE 6. It would not take my computer back, so I found myself formatting again just to get rid of that piece of crap of IE 7.

I will never put that crap back on my computer. As of now, I go between IE 6 & Avant Browser. I like the Avant Browser better, but takes a little time to get use to.

Yes it does. I do it every six months by simply backing up everything on disc and then doing a fresh install.

Note that this is very hard the first time you do it, but it gets easier and easier. You'll need to sort out a bunch of stuff [but all VERY worthwhile doing!!]:

1) your windows config. I have a bunch of things that I tweak and tune on windows [access control lists, explorers folder-view defaults, etc, etc].
After you do your first [or second..:)] reinstall, you'll remember to write all those things down so you'll be able to do it easily the next time [and the interesting thing is that there ain't so many of them, it is just hard (for me at least) to keep track of things.

2) All the apps you use. This is often a big one. I have lots of apps that don't exist any more [so I really need to be sure I know where the old setup.exe/install-zip files are for them]. Many others should just be downloaded afresh from the net [to get the latest versions], so you need to remember the right download sites. And keepign track of all the license-keys, etc. Don't forget all your device drivers that'll need installing/updating, too! [this one just bit me...sigh...: no ethernet card drivers for my Dell on the reinstall left me with no way to GET the drivers....]

3) Configuring all of the apps. Gad this has proven to be a problem. Getting all the font-choices, directory setups, UI config options, defaults etc, etc set up is a real bear [since no two apps configure in quite the same way]. Also, XP-sanitizing the apps is a nuisance if you didn't keep track of what you did the last time [e.g., knowiing which files/folders you need to tweak the ACLs on so you can use the prog from your limited acct, etc]

4) restoring the 'active data' for each of the apps. Usually not too much of a problem -- you've got your mailboxes and your browser favorites/bookmarks. On my systems, at least, not a lot of other stuff actually has to be 'reloaded' into different apps: I just need to restore the appropriate directories [with all my .pdfs and databases and images and ...etc..]

This may sound tricky but it really isn't [at least hasn't proven to be for me]. It is hard the first time, but after you've done it once or twice you (or at least "I" :)) get better organized about this and it becomes pretty simple. Among the advantages:

1) system is very uncluttered [disks slick, no crap, no junk in the registry, etc],
2) You actually get up-to-date versinos of most of the apps you use [last time I did this I was surprised at how many versions-old many of the ones I had neglected to update]
3) you discover how many applications/games you don't need/don't want any more.
4) you understand MUCH better how to backup and restore your system, and have less fear of a hardware failure.

Did you get your problem sorted out by chance?

I couldn't find anything so I'm going to do a reinstall for mine.
