As part of my cable package we get a dvr but lately it hasn't been working. I can still record but when I click play, the screen goes black. Anyway, I'm hesitant to have a repairman come because my family hasn't figured out that we can record things and I'd like it to stay that way (its been 6 months since we got it so I don't they'll ever figure it out unless someone tells them; they aint tech savvy). Anyone had a similar problem? From searching the internet, I read someone say that rebooting their DVR usually solves any problems. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks for any help.

Rebooting is easy. Depending on the model you should be able to do it through the menu somehow, or just unplug the thing and wait a few seconds before plugging it back in.

The way you describe it, it sounds like it's either a just a minor software glitch that you're recordings are coming out blank, or it could be a faulty hard drive. If it's a hard drive you either got to get someone to repair the unit or install a new drive with proper software image yourself. I'd suggest getting the model of the dvr and doing a google search to see if other's are having the same issues, and what they problem was.

BTW, what is the model and your service provider? I ask because I have the new directv mpeg-4 dvr, and I've had issues with it missing recordings and blank screens like you described. I found if I leave the dvr on standby it doesn't miss recordings.
