OK. I bought a Polaroid DRM-2001G DVD Recorder with 80GB Hard Drive. I went through hell getting it hooked up the way I wanted, but it's finally done.
I started trying it out, and got my first cap (yay!). Sorry for the Paris Hilton cap, but that's all that was on at the time. I went through hell to get one .jpg

The device I bought only records to DVD in .VOB format. The quality is good.

I'm not finding much on the web that caps from .VOB. I did find several converters though.
dvdXsoft DVD Ripper
iSofter DVD Ripper

Any advice on what format I want to be able to convert to? .avi? .mp3?

I'm getting there ... making progress.

Virtual Dub Mod is a free app. There are some limits to it with editing, but it makes really good avi's.

Way to go man!! I use V-Dub 95% of time. It's free and easy to set up. It's also pretty fast if you have a fast computer.Try avi, and convert to audio to mp3. Like donkeed said it's a little tricky with editing, i use different programs to split and merge clips. You can also edit with the the hard drive on your recorder. Let me know if you need help with editing on your machine.

Good Luck.

PowerDVD is good for capping from DVD's:

You can adjust the video settings and save presets.

So here was my solution ..........
1) Record directly to the hard drive of the DVR
2) Copy to DVD (1 hour = 1 DVD at the quality I'm recording at)
3) Convert VOB to DIVX using the DIVX converter
4) Use DIVX Author to cut out all the "stuff" I don't want (one hour of Fox News Live has about 6.5 minutes of ED Hill shots)
5) Cap using Media Player Classic
6) Rename the caps with a Bulk Rename program before I upload them to Fotki

It's a little involved. I couldn't get Dscaler to work at all. I'm going to play around with the quality of the recording and maybe try recording directly to DVD for stuff I know I'm always going to cap (like ED Hill)

Your caps look good. You can take stills using the original .vob files too.
