There are DVD-DL (DL=Dual Layer) discs out there that hold 8.5GB but you need a DVD burner capable of burning dual layers. They are more expensive than the regular DVDs.

I have a set of 50 blank dvds and have yet to use them. I looked on the disc and it says 4.7 gigs on each one. I was just wondering is that the biggest capacity they have right now or are there others that hold more? |

Well I can't use them right now but I am getting that HSN yesterday Today's special value gateway laptop and then I can burn stuff. I don't know if its dual or not. What kind of dvd burner/dvds do you guys that have them already use? |

I have a Memorex DL Burner and I use Memorex DVDs. I actually got the burner before I understood about DL burning. I also shop for the Memorex DVDs on sale as much as possible.

Yeah, the 50 I have are Sony, so far the cds have been pretty good so i'm hoping the DVDs will be too. |

Since on the subject of DVD,anyone confirm quality difference between recording on XP(60min)vsSP(120min) I tried recording both and can't tell any difference. And on the RW disc,does it ruin or alter the disc/quality every time you delete and record again over and over? |

From what I understand, recording shows in longer formats (SP, LP) has some quality degradation but I agree with you that sometimes you can't see the difference. I have never used an RW to record shows because you can never finalize the disc to play on another DVD player.

There is definitely a difference between XP 1hr (8Mbps) and SP 2hr (4Mbps). It's harder to tell when watching on a TV, but when you go frame by frame on a PC you can see a difference. It's especially better if you're recording from better quality vids. I record on the 2hr mode when recording TV shows just because the it's more cost effective. A regular DVD+R for only an hour of recording is a waste IMO. I've got a bunch of RW discs. They are great with older burners that get disc errors since the stuff that's already on there is easier to recover with a PC. They do go bad after a while, but if you keep them clean and unscratched they can last a pretty long time. You can always copy the content onto a regular DVD+R then erase the disc and use it for something else. |

Thanks Rocky & Donkeed!!! That would explain why my RW recorded disc won't play on my new(LG DTV tuner)DVD player/recorder.Even tho i can't tell the difference of playback between the two speed,i'll take Donkeed's word by preserving the show on XP mode. |

I actually suggest recording in SP since recording in XP is sort of a waste. The only time I record in XP is when I want to make avi's so the source vid is the best, and I only do it with rewritable discs so I'm not wasting a DVD. Just record, copy the .vob's to hard drive, convert to avi, then erase the discs and do it over.

I've used +RW, and it works on some DVD players but not all of them. Check the player instruction manual or specs for compatible discs. |
