I have to record with Hauppauge for that channel. There is no firewire on the Diretv's HR-20 DVR, and as of yet there is no way to network the DVR to extract vids.

Directv will soon be dropping all mpeg-2 HD channels which I get on the Directivo. I'll have to record everything on HR-20 and capture/archive with Hauppauge. I had a good run with it, and I'm still adding stuff. I've archived over 1TB of HD Movies from HBO HD, ShoHD, and HDNet Movies. I'm still keeping my Directivo for the SD stuff. Much easier and better quality than using s-vid capture or recording DVD's. :)

So the Firewire connection is only available on all Cable TV Digital Boxes?

I know Motorola cable boxes have them, and Directv doesn't. Not sure about Dish.

You might want to ask shad0w about details. I think chair gets his caps like that too. I remember showing him that thread a long time ago when he said he had Comcast.

Chair uses the DVR first and later moves it to the pc in small parts
then takes pics and trashes it

With the firewire capture you can do the recordings live or you can do them off of the dvr recordings. I'd suggest having dvr too because it's good to have a backup... and easier to record in sections so you're not stuck with a 10-20g file if you just let capdvhs run forever or based on a scheduled recording. The whole process is easy once you get the hang of it.

So via firewire the PC can access the recorded files on the DVR or it can record live if you have software that can access the feed?

The firewire can record off the HD box live or from the dvr.

Right now I'm recording the heavyweight championship fight live from HBO HD and will attempt to spread it around before "sceners" do lol! Once it's done I'm gonna simply cut the fight segment then up it.

How much does firewire costs?

You just need a firewire card and cable. Both should be not to expensive.

I saw a box that has usb but no firewire connection
so can you do the same with usb to usb?
I read that usb are not enabled on these boxes so i don't know why they have one :?
Does this work only on Mpeg 2 and not a box with H.264?

Usb won't work... and as you said, the boxes don't have them enabled. They're there for possible later activation. I could be wrong but I think usb is also too slow to get the hd content over to the pc like firewire can.

For Dish Network DVR you have to pay $40 to enable the USB port for an external hard drive.
