Please don't bump your own thread. You could have 1000 views, and it wouldn't matter. If they don't know the answer and reply, then you'll be getting bad advice.

You could be a little more specific in your question. I had no clue what you were talking about with playback.

Details that might be helpful to know:
1) What software are you using to play DVDs?
2) Are you getting video?
3) Does this problem only happen with DVD playback? Can you play back other videos (like those posted here) without issues?

It's most likely an audio codec issue. A reinstallation (or a change to something else) of your DVD player's software might work.

Usually the first thing I try is simply restarting the computer.

Yeah, first step would be to try different software to see if it's just not the player. VLC plays DVD's so try that (link in my sig). VLC also has built in codecs so if you missing something on your computer it will still playback.

If it's a codec issue which I'm suspecting it is as well, then it's likely AC3 filter your missing.

I agree with donkeed, most likely an AC3 audio codec error,

On XP the audio is sent down the IDE BUS,
Both CD & DVD
Unlike Win 98 that used a seperate audio cable to the MB

So if audio CD`s are working but DVD isnt then it is logical to assume its a codec issue.
