It looks to me like the (almost) free ride days are over. You used to wait 45 seconds for the download link to appear, and it was only 25 if you registered for a free account. They revamped their look, and along with that they changed the wait time for free accounts to a full minute. Is it even longer for unregistered users, too? I don't even think they give reward points for downloads anymore, because I don't see them on my account page.

I know all good things must come to an end, but at least it wasn't a Rapidshare-like debacle.

I didn't even notice the new home page, which has all these short clips of celebrity endorsements. Interesting that it's a large "urban" celeb list... Snoop Dogg, will.i.am, Kanye West... so, I'm really supposed to feel inclined to use MU because Kim Kardashian says it's "fast and safe and amazing," eh? Don't get me started on the lame "Mega song" they made of it all. This is all kinds of weird. :?

To continue this conversation with myself, I have now noticed that the wait time for registered and free users is currently at 10 seconds. Feeling a little giving for the holidays, maybe?

I've also found that the points system was suspended in late July for some sort of retooling. Obviously, it's still not back. MU has been under attack from hosting copyrighted materials lately (which file host hasn't?), maybe that's the reason for the celebrity endorsements and that lame-ass Mega Song. :rolleyes

Megaupload was shut down today and its employees indicted.

Quote:
One of the world's largest file-sharing sites was shut down Thursday, and its founder and several company executives were charged with violating piracy laws, federal prosecutors said.

An indictment accuses Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart online piracy.

The Justice Department said in a statement said that Kim Dotcom, formerly known as Kim Schmitz, and three others were arrested Thursday in New Zealand at the request of U.S. officials. Two other defendants are at large.

All good things must come to an end? And every single video in my Robin megathread is on MU. :x

I guess maybe I'll slowly start reloading them all on RS, since I'm still foolish enough to pay for their premium service for some reason...

i wonder if all the other hosting sites might get nervous and shut down before it happens to them too. hopefully having premium accts doesn't get people arrested at those sites!

Shite!!! I had hundreds of uploaded files on MU. Everything from movies to short clips to music and more. MU's links never died, which made It was the best file host site... what a tremendous loss.

That's one of the big questions this brings up --
For all of the copyright material, there's tons of personal files like you're describing. Now that Megaupload's servers have been
cut off, and will likely be used as evidence, can the government be held responsible for all of that "personal property"
that's stored on them? Isn't there a risk of many thousands of people going after the feds because they can't access their files?

Any legal experts able to take a shot at this?

.

I still have a lot of stuff, movie files and clips on mediafire, so I have been downloading all of my stuff back onto my computer in case that gets shut down too.

I'm guessing they will put it back online and allow users the ability to retrieve their files. When they shut down the Poker sites after the initial blackout they put it back online for a couple of days to allow all the American players the ability to cash out. I mean if folks were paying to store their files on there they just can't stiff them like that, they have to allow them the chance to retrieve those files.

I think once the feds go through the servers and delete the copyrighted stuff, the other personal files should be able to be retrievable but it will take time. The dumb part of all of this is that the servers were located in Virginia and DC! :?

Please see my post in the Babe Alert Forum about this shut down and how we are going to handle dead MU links. :Kool

I think the biggest deal about MU was that it paid people back for hosting copyrighted files. Rapidshare and the others don't have a monetary reward system, do they?

yes, they all sell premium access and also pay their uploaders for every x amount of downloads
