I can recall before David left NBC for CBS, there used to be late night shows hosted by the late Tom Snyder and Pat Sajak for a brief time.

Who knows what direction will CBS decide on?

the price is right is great - but he's done it for a long while and is capable of much more

I've been watching Dave for over 30 years. I'm really going to miss him. But I doubt CBS will go after Leno,and if they do it would be a mistake. They need a younger fresher talent to go up against Fallon.

Fallon stinks. Wouldn't be mad if Ferguson got the call.

Maybe Jerry Seinfeld or Louis CK.

I watched him without fail throughout starting in the late 80's, but my watching habits have fallen off in recent years. Still, it's surprising to hear the news even though you knew it would be coming sooner than later. At least he's going out on his own terms, which is more than his replacements at his old network can say. And c'mon Dave, you have one more year to start throwing crap off the rooftop again!

You're right about Sajak -- he went up against Johnny Carson for about a year or two soon before Carson
retired.

But Snyder coming to CBS was Dave's own idea after he'd already started "Late Show".
Tom was the first host of "Late Late Show" from '95 to '99, before either of the Craigs -- Kilborn & Ferguson.




True -- that would be a groundbreaking move. And as well as Fallon seems to be starting off, I've always thought that Tina would've made an equally good choice for the Tonight Show.
(Also notice how NBC's gotten her into a new contract recently -- almost wonder if she's their "backup plan"
in case Fallon should tank at some point ---? )

But to see either her or Amy take the CBS job would be a stretch, I think.
Sure, they might be considered for it, but keep in mind they're both pretty tight besties with Fallon--
I'd think everyone involved would consider it almost backstabbing if it ever really happens.

CBS is going to probably look in their own stable first --
Ferguson ( probably has first dibs if he wants it)
and like you said, Stewart and Colbert may be approached too (CBS/Viacom owns Comedy Central)

I remember back when I used to watch a late night show regularly this was probably the one I would watch. I don't really do so at all anymore though. If I did watch regularly now it probably would be Ferguson, his show seems fun and he seems to be able to get incredibly sexy and beautiful women to do interesting and fun things during his interviews!

If Ferguson takes Dave's spot on the Late Show, how about Carrie Keagan replacing Craig?

My thinking is that Craig will get asked first, if he wants to move to 11:30 or stay at 12:30, after that the list is long and the speculation will be rampant for the forseeable future.

I could see Neil Patrick Harris as a possibility for Dave's gig. Ferguson is hilarious but maybe he likes being in LA, and the 12:30PM slot seems better for his style of show.

Bottom line is, who is going to be the future king/queen of social media?
Audiences have changed since the Internet's early days, so advertisers are wondering--why stay up that much anymore?

I almost mentioned in my initial post that I noticed that the show's official Twitter account has really attempted to up its game in the past month or so. Photos of the guests backstage holding handwritten signs are posted. They're retweeting more viewer comments. It's like they finally noticed what Jimmy Fallon has done with his shows and are trying to replicate it. Of course, maybe that's necessary since Dave doesn't quite know how to work the Twitter machine on his own.

While Dave didn't get the ratings Leno did, it seems to be a universal judgement he was far more influential than Leno
I'd agree with that
Not only was Dave funnier than Leno, he changed the attitude of the talk show
Instead of being reverential toward his guests, like Carson and Leno were, Dave made it clear to his guests: This is my show, you play by my rules
He was a better interviewer as a result
He also showed people how to handle a scandal
He admitted what he did and apologized

Before he leaves, he should do a show with nothing but a top 10 list of classic Letterman bits
