MSNBC Shaking up Daytime Schedule

By Chris Ariens on January 27, 2014 10:08 AM

ReidFarrowFirst on TVNewser: MSNBC is set to announce changes to its daytime lineup, perhaps as early as today.

Cable news newcomer Ronan Farrow (far right) will host his new show at 1pmET, sources tell TVNewser, while Joy Reid (near right), the managing editor of NBC’s TheGrio.com, who has been filling in on MSNBC, is expected to be named host at 2pmET.

Currently, NBC’s chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell anchors “Andrea Mitchell Reports” at 1pm and Tamron Hall anchors “NewsNation” at 2pm. Hall is negotiating a new contract that would give her an expanded role at the “Today” show while also keeping her on the MSNBC schedule, likely at 11am which has been vacant since Thomas Roberts moved to “Way Too Early.” Meanwhile, the Noon hour has seen fill-in anchors since Alex Wagner moved to 4pm two weeks ago.

Much of MSNBC’s daytime schedule will be in flux for two weeks, starting next week, as the network carries Olympic Hockey and Curling from the Sochi Games.

>Update, 11AM: MSNBC has made it official. The changes take effect after the Olympics. Read the release after the jump.

“NewsNation” with Tamron Hall moves to 11 a.m., “Andrea Mitchell Reports” moves to Noon ET

MSNBC introduces Ronan Farrow at 1 p.m. and Joy Reid at 2 p.m. ET

NEW YORK – January 27, 2014 – MSNBC’s new daytime programming schedule will debut on Monday, February 24. The announcement was made today by Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC.

Starting Feb. 24, “News Nation” with Tamron Hall will move to 11 a.m. ET and “Andrea Mitchell Reports” will move to 12 p.m. ET.

“Tamron has established herself as one of the best news anchors in the business. It strengthens us to have her hosting during our morning news block,” said Griffin. “Andrea Mitchell is so critical to msnbc and I’ve always thought her show should be at noon. Andrea brings on the biggest newsmakers of the day and the new time slot will help showcase her work.”

MSNBC is adding two new voices with Ronan Farrow at 1 p.m. and Joy Reid at 2 p.m.

“One of the highlights of this job is finding new talent,” said Griffin. “Ronan and Joy are two of the most thoughtful and impressive journalists out there and I’m excited for what they will bring to the afternoon.”

MSNBC DAYTIME SECHEDULE – as of Feb. 24:

9 AM – The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd

10 AM – Jansing and Co.

11 AM – NewsNation with Tamron Hall

NOON – Andrea Mitchell Reports

1 PM – Ronan Farrow hosts*

2PM – Joy Reid hosts *

3P – The Cycle

MSNBC announced Ronan Farrow’s show development in October 2013. Prior to joining MSNBC, Farrow was a foreign policy official in the first Obama administration. He founded the State Department’s Office of Global Youth Issues and reported to the Secretary of State as the United States’ first Special Adviser for Global Youth during the Arab Spring revolutions. He also served for two years as a US diplomat focused on the conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan. A lawyer and a Rhodes Scholar, Farrow has written about human rights and foreign policy outlets including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times.

Joy Reid has been the managing editor of TheGrio.com and MSNBC contributor since July 2011. She’s also been a frequent substitute host on MSNBC during all dayparts. Reid is a political columnist for “The Miami Herald” and editor of the politics blog The Reid Report. Reid has worked in television and radio news since 1998 and her columns have appeared in a variety of outlets including Salon.com.

That's exactly what it means. FOX is such the juggernaut that both CNN and MSNBC cannot seem to catch up. I'm not necessarily interested in the ideologies involved, I'm just concerned with how this will affect the showcasing of the ladies. I don't care when or for what network Tamron is on as long as she continues to bring the (body) heat.

Well, before Alex Wagner took over for Martin Bashir the opinion started at noon so this isn't much of a change.....just a delay of an hour really.

CNN and MSNBC should give up.....Fox is so far out ahead that they should concentrate on battling to finish a strong second.

That aside, for a network that hides Krystal Ball and Abby Huntsman under a desk I wouldn't hold out much hope for MSNBC bringing much heat.

and now Karen Finney's show is done...

I say get out of here with all your opinion shows and just hire a "variety pack" of hotties to read us the news, no desks permitted!

Milissa Rehberger is looking a bit old, but I'd rather have her for an hour just doing straight news... She is normally working the weekends with news updates

I turned off MSNBC when people including Monica Novotny, Lisa Daniels, Melissa Stark, Cheryl Casone, Contessa Brewer, Jackie Meretsky and Amy Robach all left among others. They went into a nose dive after that when they went all opinion.

I want to add Ronan was fired and since that announcement he has been making errors on his show. I think his last show will be the final week of this month.

Whenl Chris Jansing left, that was the final straw for me.

It doesn't surprise me at all that MSNBC is pretty much all opinion. The mainline NBC network reports news and they use MSNBC as an opinion channel. Fox News on the other hand mixes it all up. I'm not saying one approach is better or worse than the other, but both are one sided. I don't see MSNBC going into a nose dive unless you don't agree with their political positions or dislike their pundits. I'm sure they're popular with their audience just like FNC is with theirs.
