There are no legal ways through U.S. sites to get free mp3's of copyrighted material. I presume that's what your looking for and not Steve's garage band's newest single fresh from the home studio. Even with software you pay for dowloading copyrighted material is illegal...period. I don't know where your moral stance is on stealing music, but in legal terms if you do download copyrighted material through p2p's there is the unlikely chance you get caught and face charges.
German copyrights even go a step further. According to them it's not allowed to copy your own self acquired cds anymore. I'll spare a comment on that.
There are quite a number of links to 'legal' mp3 downloads on the net. Some take advantage of the ongoing dispute over p2p filesharing issues between the US music industry's interests and the Russian government's standpoint toward their demanding. To get a hint of what's going on there read

'File-sharing war won't go away; it'll just go abroad'.
The mp3 offering site in question (
allofmp3.com), has everything in store you could ever imagine. Since downloading songs from this site from the US (and most european countries) is illegal, I presume linking this site here could be the same. OK, put me into jail then, and my right of free speach as well.
But despite all the facts and uncertainties about these rights you might wanna take a look at these sites too:

The only link i can truly recommend for downloading some really good tunes though (that is, if you're into 'Alternative Rock') is the 'Song Vault' of '
god's little joke'. I happen to meet the band's guitarist quite frequently on a p2p chat (funny eh?). When I asked him wether he had any thoughts on spreading copyrighted material of his band throughout the www he replied he'd rather preferred to be heard then to be unheard at all. The band has released three cds so far, has split unfortunately, but will reunite hopefully some day again. The drummer has put together their sites 'Song Vault' in order to spread their music themselfs (I counted 50 songs!). I think that says it all. Maybe you have a go at their music, if you don't mind the rather low quality bitrates of 128 to 160 kbs. And maybe you even choose to buy some of their tunes too.
