OK, I have contributed a few caps over the last months -- but i have a lot of good stuff on DVDs I own. Can someone tell me the best (free) software that will allow my to cut out a 5-10 minute segment from a DVD and create a .wmv, .avi, .mpeg, or .divx file?

There's quite a few approaches to that. I presume you have a dvd drive on your pc so you can either copy the vob files onto your hard drive. I use Nero a lot to edit vids like that, but there are other options. Virtual Dub is free, but you should learn how to use it. Otherwise you can have quality problems or audio off sync.
