I'm not sure about most of that, if the red x appears when you attempt to save the picture, there may be something on the website prohibiting downloads of the pictures. For saving pictures that turn into bitmaps it is probably a full cache. I would recommend not using Internet Explorer at all, since Firefox is free; but if you go to tools> internet options> under the 'general' tab find 'temporary internet files' and the button marked 'delete files'. Click it, then do a test on a picture you have had trouble with before. If it still downloads as a bitmap you may have damaged/corrupted programs or files causing this. Someone else will have to answer that.

Scooby are you on AOL? It sounds like that Art file debacle that I used to have when I was on AOL.

I am having a tough time reading your post. But I'll give you a little advice best I can from saving a picture, putting it in a particular folder and choosing a program to view that picture.

Try this: Save a picture. (Right Click/ Save Picture As/ Destination Folder (you can put it in My Pictures or My Documents or any where YOU want it to go, just remember where you put it.)

Open the file where you put the picture. Then right click the picture file itself, not in paint but in the folder you save a picture to. (Right click...scroll to Open With...the next box will say a few programs to use, instead scroll to the bottom of that window to "Choose Program...")

From there find Windows Picture and Fax Viewer left click it once, then click the check box for "always use this program to open this type of file" and then click OK. Now Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is your default for that particular photo extension (jpeg).

I am sure you've tryed this but when you right click on the image use the menu option for save image as...... if you hit send image as or or save link as you will get a red X.

I think that your problem is that the particular website you're looking at is actively trying to prevent you from saving the image [which, as copyright holders, is their prerogative, of course]. The way they usually do that is to dump some Javascript onto the web page that catches right-clicks [and so blocks your browser from popping up its usual context menu that would let you, among other things, save the image]. Many browsers [including the one I use, maxthon, include an "enable right-click" plugin for finessing this very problem.
