I'm thinking about experimenting with different encoders. Most wmv encoders i've used the past returned pretty bad results compared to Xvid. I would like to find a good quality wmv encoder, because wmv is a little easier for people to playback.

I won't object to any mpeg encoder suggestions as well.

Thanks,

fitz.

The best one I've used is Windows Media Encoder. I don't know the Vista setup, but for XP you have to update your system to Microsoft Framework 2.0.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... fault.mspx

For me it's really slow so I stay away from it. The only benefit for me for WMV is that you get thumbs, but I've found that if you do a lossless re-mux .mpg to .tp and change the extension back to .mpg you get thumbs. Weird, but it works.

Just a note: You're never going to please everyone. If you post wmv then the Mac guys will have issues. Some people can't play high bitrate AVI's because their PC's are too slow. Some of them don't have mpeg-2 codec. Just post whatever format is best and easiest for you.

WMencoder won't let me convert VOB/MPG files :?

I'm not trying to please anyone, just trying something different. If i don't like the quality of wmv i'll switch back to Xvid.

I might go with Divx 6. I just remembered i had this software on my system. I just did a conversion with it and it looks a little cleaner and smoother than xvid.

I might need some help setting up some of the features in the future. I shouldn't have any problems getting help, since alot of people use Divx.

Thanks

It should work with mpegs. Check the Microsoft knowledge base for know issues with Vista.

Also, I think Vista's Windows Movie Maker should convert all types of mpegs.

If you are looking to make full frame 640X480 clips DIVX is good cause the videos can playback on Windows and Mac.

I believe with the Flip4Mac plugin Mac's can view WMV content encoded in the newer WMV codecs.
