First of all let me thank everyone for their input on the last couple threads. Really helped me out. Now that I have the computer picked out...what about video editing software. I think the package I got comes with Adobe Elements. Im going to mess with the software that comes with it but as always im sure its not the full version. I want to buy software for some major editing. Now Im not going to blow 800 dollars on Adobe Premire but would like to get something decent. I do have a dumbed down version of Pinnacle studio which isnt too bad. Doesnt have all the features since its not the full version. So far my choices would be the newest Pinnacle Studio

http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/u ... ate+11.htm 129.99

or Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platnum edition

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/pro ... sp?pid=447 119.95

or any other suggestions. As you can tell I have some Christmas money Im spending :jetserl

Anyone else do any serious video editing? Would mainly be making best quality avi files that arent so large in size. Thanks again guys!

Adobe Elements is only a photo editing software. :Kool

I cap from DVD with Nero DVD playing software. If I want to make a clip, I use SmartRipper to rip from the DVD, Virtual Dub Mod to edit and convert to AVI and finally use Windows Movie Maker to add my usual credit opening. :Kool

I use the Womble MPEG Video Wizard to edit my clips:

Then, I use the FREE Media Coder to convert to XVid:

I have Pinnacle 11.
I have Nero 8.
I USE Divx Author.
You can download an evaluation version at www.divx.com
I find it easier to use, more versatile, and it creates smaller-sized videos.
If you like it, it's pretty cheap for a license.

For capping, believe it or not, I still use Media Player Classic.
I can't find anything else that will allow you to step through a video clip, stop where you want, and quickly create a screen capture in .jpg format with one click. The price is right too (free).

For clips, if you are capturing mpeg-2 (.mpg, .ts, .tp, .vob) then I HIGHLY recommend a lossless mpeg editor like VideoRedoPlus or Womble. These don't re-encode so you save a ton of time and don't lose any quality. :Kool :Kool :Kool

For capturing, I've used Nero Vision and Sonic MyDVD (which came with the PC). Nero has much more options since MyDVD only captures in DVD and SVCD format.

For caps (stills) I don't think anything works better than Dscaler for live streams. VLC player and MP classic play almost any type of file and makes stills. All of those are free as well. Nero Showtime and PowerDVD make excellent caps. You should have something with a batch convert for the pics. ACDSee and Photoshop are good. Irfanview is free, but I'm not sure if has a batch convert.

Wow thanks guys. Im sure I will be crucified If once I get my gear and my caps and clips look the same...or worse even
I think it comes down to after I edit the mpeg clip and wanting to convert that big mpeg file down to a manageable file size for people to download. I think I might try that Divx Author. Its only 20 bucks and if it can make a big mpeg file into a small avi/divx file and retain some pretty good quality I should be fine. Ive been using AutoGk and its pretty good I guess. I have made an investment in a new computer and want to make sure I have all the right tools for making that big mpeg file into a small avi file and not lose much quality. Dont worry I will at least mess around with the software that comes with my computer. Who knows I may not need anything else.

Don't worry. It is obvious that you are a beginner capper and quite willing to learn. Because of all of the questions on software in the last few days, I have started the Software resource at the top of the Tech forum. You'll find in due time that one of the software programs will work better than what comes with the new computer. :Kool

I guess so lol

so thanks to that I have something I tried out using divx author
Here is the thread...

http://wideworldofwomen.net/WWW/viewtop ... 127#386127

thanks MM for suggesting that. I actually like it very much. Not only is it easy to use for editing...but I can cap while im trimming files down. If any of you guys are bored and want to download it and let me know what you think of the quality that would be great! Its almost 60mb so if you dont its understandable. For now on Im going to use hjsplit for easier downloads. Though the clip is a little over five minutes so dont know if thats still too big of a file or not. Anyways thanks again for everything. Im still working on color configuration on my tuner so that will just be a test and learn. Always seems as if capping news and shopping channels are so stubborn with all the light changing and stuff.
