i have something i have never seen before.

I have an 8gb portable usb.

So i use it for "special" stuff.

So then today i go to move something to it and i notice my one folder is now all messed up.

i mean REALLY messed up.

There were a bunch of videos and the ones that were avi and wmv are ok.

The others however are now changed to unrecognized formats and names?????

such as

ΓK^▓╚«Æ.·ê

and

≈╤╦╜Mf%è.çq

and it lists the file type as whatever the last characters are of the name.

ANYONE have any clue what the heck happened?????

I've never seen anything like that before. Did you ever figure out what happened?

i have no idea. Luckily i had 98% of them backed up so i didnt lose all THAT much. It was suggested the stick got wet or dirty???

But then i formatted it after i got all i could off of it, found a tester online that writes to it, and then reads off of it, and it found NOTHING wrong.

SO it beats the crap out of me what it was.

The ONLY thing i can think of is if it might have been too close to my cell phone (which has a magnet in it) and it whacked it out.

Other than that i got nothing.

It looks like some strange font. I checked a few to see if matched, but I couldn't find any. Very strange. :?

Looks like it corrupted for some reason. You probably could have renamed the files to the correct extension if you knew what it was. Weird though.

i tried renaming them and it would give me an error, and it wouldnt even let me move them.

So basically i couldnt do a thing.

So its got me stumped.

Was it a SanDisk Cruzer (or any u3 enabled device, really)?

For some reason, the Cruzer's w/u3 tend to get corrupt - many times for no apparent reason. I'll try to find the article where I came across that.

I wouldn't trust that drive anymore to store data on without it backed up elsewhere.

I have an 8GB SanDisk Cruzer. Frankly, I don't trust any USB flash drive to store information for long periods of time. I've read too many horror stories about corrupted data on USB flash drives. The only time I ever use my SanDisk is when I need to temporarily transfer data.
