Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I figure it's similar to complaining about imagebam. :D Two or three times now, I've been attacked by rootkit infections while d/ling from links posted here to mediafire. Happened today as well, though fortunately this time my security software intercepted it--I'm not always that lucky. (Fully updated, etc...) Is this due to the files linked to or something hinkey going on at mediafire? Either way, I'm not downloading from there again until I can figure out how to do it safely... Thanks!

Yes, I've had the same problem. My AV went wild. "An intrusion attempt by http://www.mediafire.com was blocked"

Attacking computer: http://www.mediafire.com (38.114.196.10, 80)
Risk name: HTTP Malicious Toolkit Variant Activity 2

Network traffic from http://www.mediafire.com matches the signature of a known attack...

and so forth.

I saved a screenshot of the alert summary.

I've only used megaupload since it happened.

Don't forget that sometimes it is those ads that sneak in the bad stuff and not MediaFire itself. :Kool

Nonblogger, the details of my blocked attack match yours, FWIW.

Rocky, I figured it was probably something to do with the ads or popups, since it doesn't happen consistently. I didn't really think it was the poster of the files, (how could a fan of Margaret Brennan have a bad bone in his body?) :) The problem is that every time I see a link to a file on MediaFire, I have to stop and ask myself whether it's worth the risk of spending three or four days disinfecting my computer.

I understand how Norton feels, but to further illustrate Rocky's point, my viral experience was almost word for word identical to Norton's, except my computer was infected after a download from Megaupload instead of MediaFire. I don't think any download site or is more safe or more susceptible than another.

Hm, maybe rapidshare is better, even with it's limits. They don't run outside ads like mediafire and megaupload.

I highly recommend using Firefox and getting the No Scripts and AdBlock Plus add ons.

Just remember to white list this board so we can get money from the google ads to keep this place running. :)

Margaret? Is it me then? I've never had a popup or an ad come up while using Mediafire. So this is all new to me. They did seem to delete a couple of files of mine one time though. I don't know how. Luckily, I have them on my hard drive.

Kevin77, thanks for the tips. I use FF and keep it updated, but didn't know about those add-ons. Will investigate with all speed--and make sure I don't deprive this site of the Google bucks. :)

DennisMa, no worries, mon! :shades It was your latest clips of MB that attracted my attention, but not your fault that hinkey things were going on. Many thanks for your contributions. I just have to figure out how to enjoy them safely... ;)

DenisMa: Keep posting as you usually do. Like it was said earlier, the hosting places don't know what is in the ads until a complaint is made to them. We had seen this exact ame problem with ImageVenue several months ago. :Kool

Okay. Well, I hope they fix that problem. I'll keep using Mediafire then.

DennisMa, I installed the add-ons Kevin77 recommended (jeez, it's interesting and a little scary to get a sense of what goes on behind the scenes on Web pages!) and d/l'ed your MB clips from 7/16 without incident. Great work, I'm very glad I persevered! :) Thanks for your clips and thanks for the help, everyone...

I wonder then if this problem is new. I wonder if people had a problem with this in the past. Well, if anybody did and they wanted a file I could put it onto Rapidshare or something else.
